Sharpness – Patch Bridge (Slimbridge) (Sat 6th July)

Left at 10:20 arrived at 12:30.

Yesterday we watched the Murray semi-final , well done Andy, thank heaven he rid us of the not so gentle giant, for now at least.  Looking forward to Sundays final.  Its very warm the water is very still and quite manky really, although you can see lots of tiny fish in there and slightly bigger ones near the bow of the boats.  Derek is off on a expedition, suncreamed, bag, phone, camera and trust Tilley (his Aussie hat), hes gone to find the local shop???  We tried yesterday but the weather beat us, thats why hes gone early, 7:30 to be exact.  No movement on the water at the moment, everyone seems to be staying put.  Possibly a case of too much sun and booze, some people where sitting out in it and looking quite toasted, not for us I’m afraid.  10:20 setting off for Purton, water and then on to Slimbridge.  We don’t do sitting about so its actually proving hard being lazy, will watch ladies tennis this afternoon if we can get tele. 2 Narrowboats have gone by, one had been moored behing us and the other came off the permanent moorings at Sharpness.  Moving along the water there are quite a few boats moored, the water looks less manky on the move, its like a shiny mirror stretching out in front of us.  Just passing a NB Golden Cross, there are three guys, 2 in shorts and vests, painting the roof, they must be crackers but maybe they like fly patterned paintwork.  Arrived at Purton water point, the man in  the broadbeam we saw yesterday is still moored there and 3 NBs, 2 fastened together are moored just in front of the water tap. They have a Gazebo on the towpath and there is a group of people and dogs sat under it, obviously a gathering, there is just enough room for us to get in to the tap.  As we had nearly finished filling the tank 2 guys from Sharpness pulled alongside us, we finished, I made a coffee and then we moved off making way for them to use the tap.  There were two swing bridges to go through, as we went through and thanked the keeper we had our pictures taken yet again ? She does sound and look good especially in the sunshine.  I’m sat in the cratch, waving to passing boaters and walkers, waiting for the turning to Slimbridge !!!  Crackpot, no wonder I didn’t notice where it was when we came by, its not navigable by boat?  You moor just before Patch Bridge and walk half a mile to it? Phew maybe later then.  It’s 12:15 by now and 28 in the cratch with the flaps open.  We moored on the right hand side of the canal, there is a caravan site behind the hedge and lots of boats moored and coming and going, its a really busy place, we have tele.  We sat in the cool boat (with the fan on) and had lunch. By the time the ladies final had finished there had been dozens of boats through the road bridge, we went for a walk with the dogs and there’s a cafe/shop/bar and a pub at the  swing bridge, it was heaving.  There was a little cruiser near the bridge, it had 8 to 10 people on it and was moored right where the sign stating not to was, there were 3 or more bottles of wine on the grass, I don’t think anyone would dare to tell them to move.  We had an ice-cream and walked over the bridge to the shady side of the canal, turned round and came back to the boat to cool off.  I did some alterations to the stoppers for the portholes and lazed around feeding ducks and watching tele (Grand Prix) had tea and when it had cooled down watered the plant pots.l
