Patch Bridge (Slimbridge) (Sun 7th July)

It’s going to be another scorcher, Derek went for a paper and milk from the little cafe/shop/bar, we are staying at Slimbridge today.  I did a bit of sorting and found Derek’s elusive long shorts, I knew they were here somewhere.  We had a walk lathered in suncream and sporting my sunny brolly, its sky blue with budgies on it, appropriate as we  were going down to Slimbridge Wildfowl Centre to see if it was as good as we thought.? It looked a bit tatty from the dusty road but I went in to the reception tower and it still looks inviting.  I had a chat with one of the Stewards there and got a map for when we come back, I think the girls will like it, there is now a canoe safari, wonder if they will be brave enough to give it a try.  It was 10:30ish and getting hotter, we walked back to the boat, it only takes 15 mins or so, we got a lolly each and went to hibernate in the cool interior of the boat.  There are lots of boats coming and going, the lady at the shop said she thought there might be an ice cream crisis?  They had already had a flock!(what do you call a lot of cyclists) in for a break.  Jade a broadbeam had moved up the water and a renovated NB HMS Runcorn, who was moored directly in front of us, was getting ready to move on, the skipper came out and dusted and polished it with his felt like mop and set off down the canal??  Dutch Barge Gledhow moved in and took its place, its a magnificent boat, we have seen it along the way and its up for sale.  They stayed a couple of hours and then went on their way further down the canal, may be they think it will be seen by more people and aid their sale.   The bridge keeper is certainly having a busy day today, with cars going to Slimbridge and boats up and down the waterway.  Fry up was enjoyed, Derek cooked it this time, and we sat at the table very civilised for once and it was really nice.  We set ourselves up to watch the Wimbledon final, I actually had a long nap and missed most of the first set, woops. !!  We did think it might be a long match after the Djokovik semi final but it proved not to be as long but quite riveting anyway.  Well it really was a show, England had been waiting for a long time for this one and well done indeed a 77 year wait is over.  Congratulations to Andy its very hard to believe but he really did do it.  Derek watched the Grand Prix and we had tea, I then decided to write a few cards and post them at the Slimbridge Post Box.  As it happened I didn’t have to walk all the way to the centre there was a tatty post-box next to the pub.  It had all the relevant details on it so I assumed is was in use and put the mail in. I set off back to the boat, having only been two minutes, so I stopped for a chat with a couple who were on a little cruiser, they moor at Sharpness and come from Gwent, they knew the couple who owned Gledhow and said that they wanted £150,000 and that it was beautiful.  The Gledhows where getting on and had bought a property in Anglesey and they couldn’t take it there, so hence the decision to sell it.  You find out all sorts whilst on the waterways, people love to chat about many things.  They had had their little cruiser for 44 years and used it every weekend if possible and during the school holidays taking their grandkids now instead of their children.  Whilst I was chatting Derek came along with the dogs for their last walk of the day, it was now a lot cooler and when we got back to the boat I watered the planters and we settled to watch the tele.
